The facelifted variant, unofficially known as the 'TR3A', entered production in 1957 and the final version, unofficially the 'TR3B', was produced in 1962. With just 3,000 miles since a full restoration, this first-place award winner both fits in and stands out. The Triumph TR3 is a sports car which was produced between 19 by Standard - Triumph in the United Kingdom. Wire wheels were a factory option on the TR3, and the sparkling chrome knock-offs and whitewall tires seen here add a dash of panache that would have been envied by other TR3 owners in period. And to better exploit its potential, this car’s fully rebuilt engine is mated to another enhancement that also came later in the form of the 4-speed synchro transmission of the TR6. As well as better torque characteristics, the 2138cc unit upped power output to 105 HP.
TRIUMPH TR3A ENGINE INSTALL
While these developments, including a power boost, kept the TR3A on the pace, this fine-looking Signal Red example with delightful biscuit leather interior and matching carpets is actually ahead of the manufacturer’s own development path, as it features the larger and more powerful 2138cc engine that Triumph went on to install in the new TR4, as well as some of the very last 1962 U.S.-delivered TR3s (TR3B). Though not an official factory designation, the TR3A of 1957 featured significant enhancements, as evidenced in this offering from 1960 with its full-width grille incorporating side lights and indicators, faired-in headlights, improved accommodation and lockable doors and trunk. While gaining a considerable reputation on car-breaking European rallies and on the race track, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, the TR3 evolved further. ad that ran “How to drive a fast bargain” was no mere hyperbole as the 104 MPH TR3 was barely outpaced by the considerably more expensive 6-cylinder Austin-Healey 100/6. From 1956, it also became one of the first cars in its class to be supplied with front disc brakes. Initially rather sparse on creature comforts, and not even equipped with external door handles, the theme really gained traction with the tidied-up TR3 of 1955, which offered space for an occasional rear seat and more power from the tough 1991cc 4-cylinder engine. It has had the same owner since 1975 and is a great car for rest.
